Chicago Cubs trade Joey Gathright to Baltimore Orioles for Ryan Freel

The Chicago Cubs have traded Joey Gathright to the Baltimore Orioles for Ryan Freel.
Joey Gathright was outrighted to AAA Iowa before the trade. Upon entering the major leagues in 2004, Gathright was considered one of the fastest players; however his production was lackluster. Speed won’t kill you if you can’t get on base. The Baltimore Orioles will be the 4th team in 5 years for Gathright.
Ryan Freel spent the majority of his career with the Cincinnati Reds before being traded to the Orioles during the offseason in 2008. Freel is known to be a versatile player having played all outfield positions as well as 2B and 3B. Freel’s biggest problem is that he is injury prone.
The Sports Gatherings take: In our eyes, the Cubs came out on top by a mile. Freel’s versatiliy alone will prove to be invaluable for the Cubs. Gathright will never produce in the majors and the speed that he posseses is very much overrated. Once a decent prospect in the Rays organization in 2004, that light has really burned out….quickly.
